Route Description

Sky Ride Local in Newcastle

Join us on some amazing rides, created in association with our friends at the National Trust. Make the most of some beautiful countryside, and great facilities for cyclists.

You don't have to be the next Bradley Wiggins, but you'll need to know your way around a bike and be fairly fit to take part in our Challenging rides. If you're comfortable riding with other people and fancy a fresh challenge, these rides are perfect for you. They start at around twenty miles long, and are paced at between 11 and 12 miles an hour.

This route follows NCN route 72 along the beautiful Newcastle Quayside to Newburn with many fantastic views along the way. The route climbs across to the Derwent valley passing through the picturesque village of Ryton before visiting Gibside for coffee. The route back is down the Derwent valley to pick up Route 14 and back along the Gateshead Quayside with many spectacular views and crossing the famous Gateshead Millenium Bridge before returning to the Cycle Hub for a well earned cuppa and cake!

  • Graeme Wright "Cycled since I was 5years old, raced bmx as a child, mountain biked as a young adult ...... but then along came the family and cycling came to a stop ! But then May 2014 I did my first skyride and realised how things had slipped ! I`ve cycled every weekend since, and enjoyed meeting a lot of new friends and got a whole lot fitter in the process !!! April 2015 I qualified as a Skyride leader to try and motivate others to get on there bikes."

  • Nigel Bradley 'Hi, I'm Nigel, a 54 year old cyclist with a wife who also cycles and 2 children of 4 and 7 who also enjoy cycling. I'm built for comfort, not for speed so if you are a speed demon then you'll probably not want to cycle with me :-( I cycle for fun, health and to be sociable. I've cycled Lands End to John O'Groats as well as many other cycling challenges. I'm probably best known for what I ride which is a 1974 Raleigh Chopper which I did the Coast to Coast on as well as the Great North Bike Ride and the Tyne Cyclone... I hope to see you so we can get fit and be sociable on an enjoyable ride very soon :-) '
