Sky Ride Local in Newcastle

Join us on some amazing rides, created in association with our friends at the National Trust. Make the most of some beautiful countryside, and great facilities for cyclists.
You don’t have to be the next Bradley Wiggins, but you’ll need to know your way around a bike and be fairly fit to take part in our Challenging rides. If you’re comfortable riding with other people and fancy a fresh challenge, these rides are perfect for you. They start at around twenty miles long, and are paced at between 11 and 12 miles an hour.
This route follows NCN route 72 along the beautiful Newcastle Quayside to Newburn with many fantastic views along the way. The route climbs across to the Derwent valley passing through the picturesque village of Ryton before visiting Gibside for coffee. The route back is down the Derwent valley to pick up Route 14 and back along the Gateshead Quayside with many spectacular views and crossing the famous Gateshead Millenium Bridge before returning to the Cycle Hub for a well earned cuppa and cake!

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Jeff Kingsland Jeff Kingsland
  • Karl Rowe Karl Rowe I started to cycle when the doctor told me I had diabetes and need to start doing some form of exercise or risk having to take medication for the rest of my life.
After a few months the same doctor told me how well I was doing and to keep up the good work as the cycling was having quite an impact upon my diabetes and as a result I wasn't going to need medication for the foreseeable future.

I've carried on with the cycling and have gone from being a wreck at the end of a 5 mile commute to work, to doing the coast to coast in a day twice last year and have now cycled just over 4,000 miles in the last year alone.

Not bad for a fat middle aged bloke on a bike.

One thing I know is that if I can do it then so can you.
  • Max Hall Max Hall I'm a closing on 50 property surveyor that enjoys cycling for the health benefits, the scenery and to map out routes taking in the vast quantity of waggonways and byeways that this past industrial area have left us with. I have been cycling most of my life and cover around 250 miles a month during the spring, summer and autumn months of the year with the odd run out in the winter when there is no snow or ice on the ground. I like nothing more than helping people find the tracks near them that can get them away from busy and noisy roads. I am the route creator of the north tyneside waggonway riders putting together a route almost every weekend.
