Sky Ride Local in Manchester

Starting and finishing at the National Cycling Centre, home of Team GB, this 12 mile out-and-back ride showcases the traffic-free Manchester Cycleway (AKA The Fallowfield Loop Line). Being a former railway line, the route is flat and well surfaced, and only deviates onto the road for a short 200 metre stretch. Chorlton Park at the midway point of the route provides an ideal stopping point for some food and drink.

If you’re fairly confident on your bike and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, rides take place on mainly quiet roads with plenty of sights along the way. Rides are between 6 and 20 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Mark O'Connor Mark O'Connor Hello there fellow cyclists.Been a Ride Leader now for 4 years and I`m as enthusiastic as I was then so hence you will still see my ugly mug on the rides!I daily ride my Company bike to work as I refused a Company car so I travel approx 18 miles per day with occasional diversion to the local watering hole.Love the freedom of cycling and as my partner Mandy says "Its like being 12 again we can go anywhere".
Im always willing to help and advise people with anything regarding cycling BUT I expect people to bring spare tube/repair kit/multitool etc anything else and we can usually get people up and running again soon with the help of the other leaders. Most of all though enjoy yourselves and welcome to Skyride. Its a blast.
  • John Houghton John Houghton After taking early retirement I noticed that I was putting on weight due to not getting any exercise, so I decided to get back into cycling (after 20 years). I went on Manchester City Centre Sky Ride with the family and realised how much fun cycling was. Then I started doing the Local Sky Rides, starting with easy ones with my family, then as my strength and fitness improved I went on to complete the Steady and Well rides. After a few months I even managed the Strong rides as well.
When the rides stopped for Winter, I joined Stockport Community Cycling Club and started out on their easy rides and now even do their extra rides.
So from starting out doing 2-3 mile easy rides, I have completed the 100 mile Manchester 100.
If I can do this, then so can you. Just start easy and build your fitness and strength slowly.
Don't forget to bring puncture repair kit, spare inner tube, tyre levers and pump.
  • Lucy Sutcliffe Lucy Sutcliffe Hiya,
    I'm a Sky Ride Leader & a Breeze Champion.
I've ridden a bike to & from work most of my life but I really enjoy getting out into the countryside to ride for fun. I don't even mind the rain! I'm looking forward to some nice chilled out sociable Sky Rides, even if it rains :o)

Rider Comments on the Route

  1. nicola maduemezia Sunday 28th August
Great ride and scenery. Fab leaders too :-)
  2. Julie Blakemore Tuesday 23rd August
Carpark was abit tight and busy. Good paths to cycle on, a few style type blocks to go through which slowed things down; one major road crossing and one tram line crossing. Some side road routes to get to park. Not much to see, take refreshments if wanted as nowhere to buy in Chorlton park (visitor shop shut). No loo's too. Coming back was uphill lots of the way which was a killer! Overall didnt seem like 12miles.
  3. Brian Mills Monday 22nd August
Excellent organised ride . Thanks to the Leaders.
  4. simon westaway Sunday 21st August
