Cycling challenges prove popular

2014 already seems to be the year that more people than ever are challenging themselves on their bikes.
Building up fitness is a big motivation for many cyclists, and taking part in rides with other people – rather than slogging away solo – is helping many people stay motivated and achieve their goals. Rides on goskyride.com classified as ‘challenging’ are attracting a particular interest, according to Nick Chamberlin, National Operations Manager at British Cycling.
‘These rides are great if you’re looking for company and to build the skills involved with cycling in a group, or just fancy stretching your legs over a decent distance.’
‘We recently launched our Spring Series – and we’ve been delighted with the response so far,’ says Nick. ‘These 30-or-so mile rides are taking place throughout March, and we thought they’d be great if you’re training for a longer challenge, are looking for company and to build the skills involved with cycling in a group, or just fancy stretching your legs over a decent distance.’
And the rides British Cycling is running in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation are also proving very popular. ‘We’re delighted to have teamed up with the BHF to offer some supported rides which make great training for the London-Brighton charity ride in June,’ says Nick. ‘It helps people prepare for the big day, meet other riders who’ll be taking part, and get their confidence up.’
What if you don’t think you’re ready for a long ride with hills? ‘The beauty of setting yourself a cycling challenge is that it can be whatever distance you like,’ says Nick. ‘Sky Ride Local and Breeze bike rides offer three different levels – easygoing, steady, and challenging – so it’s really easy to pick one that gives you a goal and helps you push yourself a little bit further.’
