Runner-up - Gary Brennan

Gary Brennan

This summer we've been searching for Britain's Biggest Cycling Fan. Coming in third is Gary Brennan. Read Gary’s story below.

Gary writes...

At 39 Stone and 13 pounds (what I used to weigh before cycling fell in love with me) I used to be Britain's biggest cyclist. However, cycling has turned my life around and I'm now just 13 stone.

Cycling saved my life, and now it is my life! I cycle to work every single day, be it via the Peak District or the frozen canal towpath in the winter on my CX bike. For a challenge I've even become a blue slip accredited track rider at the velodrome in Manchester. When not out on my bike I enjoy watching the pros on TV, cheering on Wiggo and the Manx Missile Mark Cavendish.

When all that’s finished I enjoy tinkering with my bikes, even building my own from time to time.

I've encouraged many colleagues and friends to take up cycling to work and sportive riding. Hundreds of the 325,000 readers of my blog have taken my lead and started to cycle. I recently appeared on the ITV show The Cycle Show (complete with a cardboard cut-out of my former self!), in an attempt to help inspire a nation of obese people to take up cycling and become healthy just like I've done.

There is nothing I don’t love about cycling, and I love passing that message onto everyone I meet. For that reason, I believe I am this country’s biggest (yet much smaller than I was) cycling fan. Anyway, enough of this chit-chat, where is my bike? I need to get out there and ride...
