Get into…cycling at night

Before you know it the clocks have changed and the darkness is upon us, but don’t worry there’s no need to hang up your wheels. You just need to be a little more prepared that’s all – here's our top tips for cycling at night…

1. Be bright

Wearing a bright colour is always a good idea when you’re riding at night – especially if you’re riding on the roads. If you don’t fancy fluorescent yellow or lurid green, how about bright red and traffic cone orange? Both are excellent choices for increased visibility.

2. Hi-Vis

Reflective clothing or accessories are always a good option when riding in the dark. There are lots of products to choose from so if a Hi-Vis vest isn’t quite your style, how about a Hi-Vis rucksack cover, a Hi-Vis belt, reflective cuffs or even LED arm strips. Make sure you’re seen from the side too with some reflective spoke clips. More tips for making yourself visible.

3. Light up

Bike lights are a must and the more the merrier as far as we’re concerned. When cycling at night UK law requires you to have front and rear lights, so it’s well worth investing in a decent set. Plus don’t forget to take them with you even if it’s not actually dark when you set off – winter evenings have a sneaky habit of drawing in quicker than you expect. Find the right bike light for you.
