Adapted Cycling Centre to be unveiled at Open Evening

East Staffordshire Borough Council will officially unveil its new Adapted Cycling Centre at an open evening on Friday 30 August at Shobnall Leisure Complex.

Following a successful grant of £79,074 from Staffordshire County Council’s Aiming High Capital Fund the new Adapted Cycling Centre will be home to 16 adapted and 16 non adapted cycles, which will be available for local residents to use around Shobnall Leisure Complex grounds.

The open evening to be held between 5.00pm and 7.00pm will give residents the chance to simply turn up and ‘have a go’ with an opportunity to learn how to safely use the adapted cycles, whilst finding out more about cycling across East Staffordshire.

The facility will provide an ongoing infrastructure to provide disabled cycling to families in East Staffordshire and will build upon the success of East Staffordshire Borough Council’s partnership with British Cycling in providing Sky Ride Local Events this summer.

Sky Ride Local bike rides in East Staffordshire are the perfect opportunity for the whole family to get together and take part in fun, community rides and explore the local area. All rides are organised and guided by British Cycling trained Ride Leaders, who are on hand to offer encouragement and support throughout. There are rides for all ages with different levels available from easygoing to more challenging rides.

Check out our ‘Ride Finder’ at the top of the page to find a ride near you.

Support

Cycling support

With summer now upon us, it’s time to grab your bike and get cycling in East Staffordshire. There are a host of activities designed to offer you a little help and support in getting going.

Bikeability Level 1

Welcome to Bikeability, ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st Century! During Level 1 Bikeability training, you learn to control and master your bike. The training takes place in an environment away from cars or traffic.

5-10 year olds: Thursday 14 August

Bikeability Level 2

Level 2 Bikeability takes place on local streets, giving you a real cycling experience. You will be taught how to deal with traffic on short journeys such as cycling to school or the local shops.

To complete the course both afternoon sessions need to be attended.

10+ year olds: Thursday 14 & Friday 15 August

Balanceability

Balanceability teaches children under six the skills required to learn to ride a pedal bicycle. Through the use of pedal-less bikes, Balanceability eradicates the use of stabilisers and promotes the fundamental skill of cycling, which is balance.

3-6 year olds: Thursday 14 August

Inclusive cycling

The Shobnall Leisure Complex Adapted Cycling Centre is home to an extensive range of adapted and non-adapted cycles, which will be available for local residents to use around the grounds.

Cycles are available for hire, Monday-Friday 4.00pm-6.00pm or Saturday-Sunday 10.00am-2.00pm from just £2.50 per bike. Alternatively, if you have a group or organisation who would like to ride, take advantage of the special group booking rates.
