Sky Ride Local in Manchester

A beautiful 9.3 mile cycle along part of National Cycle Network Route 66, following the refurbished Rochdale Canal towpath. Being a canal, the route is largely flat, with a few hills and ramps near the locks. The towpath surface varies from tarmac to packed shale to cobbles, so wider tyres are advisable. The canal route showcases many of East Manchester's fine refurbished warehouses, hinting at the city's world famous industrial past and postmodern future.

If you’re fairly confident on your bike and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, rides take place on mainly quiet roads with plenty of sights along the way. Rides are between 6 and 20 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Jonathan Mayo
  • Ruth Wooles Ruth Wooles I'm Ruth.
I use cycling as a way of keeping fit and getting out into the fresh air. Since I finished work about 2 years ago (early retirement) I have loved getting out into the Cheshire lanes and also off road and am looking forward to encouraging other people to do the same.
I'm not in my first flush of youth & don't go fast. I do enjoy looking at the scenery and wildlife and going at my own pace.
Looking forward to meeting you on a Sky Ride!
  • Laurence Kitchinson Laurence Kitchinson I have been involved with Sky ride for three years now having participated in several rides with my three children each year and enjoyed them so much that I decided to become an assistant leader. We cycle regularly around our local area and when we take our caravan away on weekend breaks. When the weather is fine we cycle to school and back each day. There is no finer way to see the countryside around you than by bicycle and it keeps us all fit.
