Sky Ride Local in Bolton

Rivington really is the jewel in the crown of the majestic West Pennine Moors. The village and its beautiful countryside sit on the lower flanks of Winter Hill.  Unbelievably, the top of Winter Hill was once at sea level covered in lush tropical forest.  At the turn of the century William Hesketh Lever, of Lever Brothers washing powder fame, spent some of his fortune on buying the whole manor and created the 'false' ruin of Liverpool Castle and of course the Terraced Gardens.  Your journey is a double loop along the leafy tree lined trails, making the most of the spectacular scenery and iconic landmarks.

If you’re fairly confident on your bike on dirt and gravel surfaces and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Off-Road Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, there is barely a metre of tarmac in sight on these rides so come and enjoy the scrunch of gravel and the squelch of mud under your tyres with us! Rides are between 6 and 15 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Jason Mayor Jason Mayor Hi. This is my fourth year leading SKY Ride Local. I am a regular cycle commuter and like nothing more that getting the whole family on their bikes and going for a ride. I have done a few longer charity rides and sportives.
  • Simon Reeve Simon Reeve Hiya, I am a keen cyclist who loves the thrills of MTB'ing, have ridden a fair few black runs in Wales and Scotland. Even though I ride an MTB I take part in many road cycling events in and around Manchester, the 100, Liverpool, Blackpool and Chester to name a few and also charity events I arrange with a group of cyclists in Wigan. Our last venture was to ride back to Wigan from Edinburgh, 40% of which was off road. I am looking to assist others in enjoying cycling, to help them gain the confidence in riding on and off the road and share our experiences, and leading rides is a great way to achieve this. Hope you enjoy the rides. Si
  • Graham Wright Graham Wright Hi
I've been cycling for many years mainly around the south Manchester area but have cycle toured around Devon & cornwall a few times in my youth , cycled to Anglesey in 2013 & doing the coast to coast in july 2014 .
I'll never be a racer but a steady pace does the trick , enjoying the scenary & good company as well as exploring new places is always fun .

Rider Comments on the Route

  1. Susan MacKell Sunday 21st July
Came as a family group - and although a bit bumpy on the cobbles in places - it was a really enjoyable ride with friendly and helpful leaders.
  2. Gary Leece Saturday 30th March
  3. Greg Smith Saturday 30th March
Normally a great ride on a quiet Sunday, so much going on at Rivington this weekend made progress a little slow. Normal high standards from the ride leaders though :)
  4. Tracie Jackson Saturday 30th March
