Cycling with children

Breeze bike rides are fun and social, and if an individual ride is open to children, there’s no reason why you can’t take your youngsters along with you. There are six main ways to take children on a bike ride...

Baby seats
These are for children from around six months to five years old. The seat is fixed to your bike, and they’re designed to be easy to fit. Most bike shops will be happy to fit one for you if you need some help.

Trailer bikes
Sometimes called tag-alongs or pull-alongs, these are for children from around four to nine years old. Basically these are one-wheeled bikes on a long bar which is attached to your bike. You’ll be towing your child, but they can still pedal and help out!

Trailers
Trailers can be used for babies and toddlers up to five years, and can be used for one or two children. They also have the advantage of keeping kids dry and comfortable. Many children nod off in their bike trailer. Some people find they’re also ideal for dogs!

Towbars
These are an option for children from around four to eight years old. The towbar converts an ordinary child's bike into a safe, towable trailer bike. The bar is stowed on the adult bike. When you want to use it, you unclip it, extend it and clip to the child’s bike. When the child's bike is connected, the front wheel is lifted off the ground and a stabilising bar stops the handlebars from turning. So you’re in charge of the steering!

Tandems
There are some tandems built to fit a child on the back. The back pedals are connected to the front, meaning the child will have to pedal at the same time and at the same speed as the adult. Of course, the little one doesn’t have to put in any effort if they dont want to, although you will know when the power slackens off!

Kids bikes
Many children from five years upwards can manage a short, local ride on their own bike. Your local Breeze champion will be happy to help and advise you.
