Getting into cycling in London has never been easier – and what’s more you don’t even have to own a bike to do it...

Cycling in London is becoming increasingly popular as people realise it’s the fastest, cheapest and nicest way to get around the city, with the added bonuses of being environmentally friendly and keeping you fit.

It’s not all about getting from A to B on your bike though. Many people are taking to cycling as something fun, free and cheap to do – a great way to discover the city’s hidden gems, leafy parks and beautiful views. It’s true, the capital really does look different from two wheels.

For some people the thought of cycling in the capital can be quite daunting. It doesn’t have to be. It's not all about busy roads and rush hour traffic.


Where to start cycling in London

If you’ve never ridden a bike before (regardless of how old you are), haven’t been on a bike in years or want to start riding to work on your bike, most London borough councils provide free cycle training tailored for your individual needs. To find out more information visit your borough council website or check out Transport for London's cycle training page to find out what cycle services are available near you.


Hiring a bike in the city

The wonderful thing about cycling in London is that you don’t even have to buy your own bike. There are plenty of places to hire one – the most popular scheme being Barclays Cycle Hire with docking stations in central and eastern London, and plans to move to south west London in 2013.

Buying a bike

If you’re looking to buy your own bike, you'll find London is full of great independent bike shops that will cater to your every need and find something perfect for you.
