Ten great reasons to ride to work

Cycling to work

More people are opting to get to work on two wheels than ever before. We asked regular riders what they love most about commuting by bike, and compiled a list of ten of our favourites...

1. Arrive happy

‘I enjoy arriving at work smiling and refreshed, happy that I have spent some time in the fresh air doing something I enjoy rather than sitting in traffic in my car (although sometimes I’m so out of breath and sweaty from trying to better my time I think refreshed may not be the right word).’
Ben Sedgwick, East Sussex

2. Stay fit

‘I love combining the ‘wasted’ commute time into a one hour keep fit session. I also love the wildlife on the quiet lanes – I often come across deer, barn owls and yellowhammers.’
Paul Gill, Oxfordshire

3. Take in the sights

‘I love being able to look at the sights and arriving at work with a glowing face and a feeling of achievement.’
Martin Cowley, London

4. Feel the buzz

‘The sheer buzz I get from showering and being at my desk after ten miles of hard, fast cycling and the fact that my legs are starting to resemble California Redwoods.’
John McIntyre, London

5. Save cash

‘Great way to de-stress, cheaper than driving (bike is paying for itself), easy to keep fit (no gym membership needed here!), feeling more alert than if I had driven in and I can eat as much cake as I like...’
Chris Sidney, Leicestershire

6. Clear your head

‘I like the way that it clears my head, gives me thinking space and provides a clear break between home and work. I like that it allows me to fit event training into my everyday life as well.’
Simon Lay, Manchester

7. Keep riding, for longer

‘I’m getting on a bit now and for the past three years I have ridden to and from work. I can honestly say this is the best I’ve felt all my working life. I really look forward to the journey to work.’
Keith Taylor, Stockport

8. Notice more stuff

‘I love the time it gives me to unwind after work, I have seen things in my area I never knew were there when I was using the car all the time.’
Paul Burfoot, Burton on Trent

9. Dodge the germs

‘No timetables or other commuters coughing and sneezing all over me. Saving £35 per week. Keeping fit. The list goes on.’
Ricky Faust, London

10. Take control

‘It costs nothing and it’s never delayed. There isn’t the problem of dodgy passengers. It puts me in control.’
Davrin Lewis-Jones
