Clever cycling gear that could revolutionise your ride
Think you’re clued up on all things cycling? We’ve uncovered some hidden gems, clever gadgets and cycling essentials currently on the market that you may not even know about.
Padded undershorts
Not just shorts – undershorts. A bit of padding can make cycling much more comfortable, but getting your legs out in lovely lycra isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Worn discreetly underneath your normal clothing, undershorts are a much more casual option. Whether you’re on the road, hitting the trail or commuting to and from work, a pair of these can make a big difference.
‘Polite’ hi-vis vest
Cyclists have been raving about a hi-vis vest which is having a positive effect on the way they’re treated on the road. This vest with a difference reads: ‘POLITE notice think bike’ on the back, and sports a reflective chequered band across the shoulders. On first glance you might be forgiven for thinking a rider wearing it looks a little on the ‘official’ side, which we hear makes drivers more aware and encourages them to give you the room you deserve. Equipped with fully adjustable side-straps, this vest will stay snug no matter how many layers you’re wearing.
A virtual cycle lane
Encourage other road users to respect your space with the latest hi-visibility laser light. This tiny device mounts to your saddle post and projects a beam of light behind you, either side of your bicycle, creating your very own virtual cycle lane. Beginning at the bike’s seat and extending past the rear wheel, the Light Lane gives drivers a clear sight of the space they need to leave.
Ingenious indoor storage
If you’re struggling for storage or hate keeping your pride and joy outside in the bike shed, then it’s time to think clever. One of our favourite options is the ‘Bike Shelf’, a practical wall-mounted shelf that can store books and other items, as well as keeping your wheels safe.
‘RydeSafe’ at night
Prep your bike for winter riding and ‘RydeSafe’ with reflective decals. These simple and elegant luminous stickers manage to be both stylish and safety-conscious. Each do-it-yourself kit enables easy customisation of your bike frame, rims, helmet and accessories. At night, these stickers are certainly striking, but during the day they can be as visible or subtle as you want.
Casual cleats
Ever wanted to experience the benefits of ‘SPD or clip-in’ pedalling, but don’t want to look like a cycling pro? Pearl Izumi have developed a range of trainers that act like a cycling shoe but look much more casual. They can be worn either as they are, or with SPD style cleats. Easy to walk in, perfect for nipping into your favorite coffee shop, and stiff enough to give your cycling a bit of welly.
