Cyclists take to the streets to enjoy Torbay

The first Sky Ride Torbay was a great success with over 3,500 cyclists enjoying the traffic free route around the ‘English Riviera’.

The route was officially opened by the Mayor of Torbay, Gordon Oliver at 10.00am and allowed cyclists of all ages and abilities to enjoy a traffic-free ride through the beautiful coastal town of Paignton at their own pace.

Brian Johnston, British Cycling Recreational Manager for the South West said; ‘It was amazing to see thousands of cyclists take to the streets for the first Sky Ride Torbay. It’s encouraged people in the local area to get out on their bike, and it highlights all the brilliant cycling opportunities British Cycling and Torbay Council will continue to deliver in the area.’

There was plenty of entertainment on offer for both cyclists and spectators in the sunny seaside resort. The North Green played host to a Go-Ride skills area where youngsters were encouraged to try their hand at some new bike handling techniques. Kids had fun at the Geopark and played golf at the South Green while parents had the chance to relax and soak up the festival atmosphere. The team from Halfords were busy all day providing bike checks and minor repairs for over 300 participants.

Sky Ride Torbay was just one of many ways to get involved in cycling in the area this summer. British Cycling and Sky offer other amazing cycling initiatives in the local area such as Sky Ride Local, Social Cycling groups and Breeze bike rides for women. Don’t miss the opportunity to get involved, find out more and join a ride in Torbay.
