Meet the Numb Bums
You might think naming a group after one of cycling’s most common side effects would put people off joining. Think again! We spoke to Alison who organises rides for Preston’s largest Social Cycling Group, the ‘Numb Bums’.
‘We enjoy a giggle whilst getting ourselves whipped into shape as we explore new and exciting areas of Lancashire,’ Alison told us. ‘We ride around 20 miles or more, and anyone can join us, as long as you have a good sense of humour and a padded backside!’
The group was created by Alison with the help of her friends to organise fun bike rides and find new routes. ‘My friend came up with the name ‘Numb Bums’ and I thought ‘What’s the worst that could happen?’ Now we have over 50 members from all over the region who regularly come out to play on their bikes.’
After a serious accident in 2006, Alison needed to rebuild her strength and fitness through exercise, and found cycling really helped. ‘I’ve always been a keen cyclist and used to love disappearing for the day on my bike. I don’t think my love of cycling ever left me. Riding a bike allows me to exercise without aggravating my injury so it’s perfect.’
With a core of half a dozen members who go out and ride in all weathers, the group use Social Cycling Groups to talk regularly online about when and where to go. Alison says it’s important to have input from all members to make sure everyone has a good time. Their rides cover anything from 5 to 50 miles and a cafe or pub stop is a must!
‘The more often I went riding, the longer I stayed out for, and the more new people I met. I realised this is what I was missing on my rides out: company.’
