Sky Ride Local rolls into York
On Sunday 21 July, the historic city of York hosted the 2013 men’s and women’s British National Circuit Race Championships. The city was transformed into a spectacular street circuit with the iconic landmark of York Minster taking centre stage for an evening of elite racing.
Congratulations go to Russ Downing (NetApp Endura) and Hannah Barnes (MG Maxifuel) who battled it out to win the men’s and women’s championship titles. Sunday wasn’t just about the country’s top professionals though, as 100 local people also got the ultimate cycle race experience with Sky Ride Local.
Four extra special Sky Ride Local rides took riders into York City Centre before the Championships got underway. They enjoyed exclusive access to the National Championships race circuit ahead of the professional riders and completed a lap of the route alongside our British Cycling Ride leaders.
Sunday also marked the one year to go countdown to Yorkshire’s hosting of the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2014. To mark the occasion big screen coverage of the final stage of the Tour de France played out around the city, creating a special atmosphere for spectators and competitors alike throughout the evening.
The weekend marked the start of a great summer of cycling in York with free, fun guided bike rides taking place most weekends until the end of September.
