Thousands enjoy fun in the sun at Sky Ride Southampton

The weather was kind in Southampton on Sunday as 10,000 people of all ages cycled around the city, all in the name of Sky Ride. Families and friends enjoyed riding the five mile traffic-free route as it weaved its way around Guildhall Square, Houndwell Park and Southampton Docks.

There was plenty of entertainment on hand throughout the day, including exciting mountain bike demonstrations and fun activities to test bike agility. Some enjoyed a day of gentle cycling and relaxation, pootling around the route and listening to music at the Palmerston Park Band Stand. Over at Houndwell Park the British Cycling Café was providing well-earned refreshments to riders, while the Halfords team were busy all day helping people with their bike maintenance queries, and Jaffa handed out delicious fruit to riders.

Brian Johnston, British Cycling Recreation Manager said: ‘What an amazing day! It’s been brilliant to see so many people enjoying the freedom of riding their bikes around the city. Let’s hope this has inspired people to keep riding and take part in some of the great Sky Ride Local rides we’ve got lined up this summer.’

Sky Ride Southampton is just one of many ways to get involved in cycling in Southampton. British Cycling and Sky are also bringing lots of Sky Ride Local rides to the area, as well as Social Cycling Groups and Breeze bike rides for women. Find out more and join a ride.
