Champion of the Month – Rosina McGuigan
Published 7 November 2012
This month our Champion of the Month is Rosina McGuigan from Breeze network Birmingham.
Rosina organises a ‘Fitness in the Park’ bike ride two to three times a week for women who are beginners to cycling and has helped many women to enjoy the fun and freedom of a bike ride.
Rosina originally trained as a Breeze National Standards Instructor (Learn to Ride) and became a Breeze champion in June 2012. Rosina teaches people to ride a bike, providing more skills and confidence and also organises and delivers Breeze bike rides for the women of Birmingham to carry on riding with a group.
To help more women take part in Breeze bike rides and learn to ride courses, Rosina has a partnership with Urban Cycles at Ward End Park, Birmingham where they provide free bikes and helmets for Breeze participants. This has reduced many barriers for some women to take part and Ward End Park is a hive of Breeze activity!
Rosina says 'Our one to one rides and learn to ride sessions give local women the opportunity to overcome the limitations placed on them by others (most often men) and to experience the freedom of ambition. Teaching marginalised women to ride a bike is a tool for massive social change. It worked for the Suffragettes and we see it working every day. It's an honour to be part of what Urban Cycles are doing in this place'.
A big thank you to Rosina for her commitment and support of the Breeze network and for helping the women of Birmingham learn to ride. A Team GB Links of London bracelet is on its way to you!
