Making it easier to get hold of a bike

Cycling by the canal

We know that not everyone has a bike to enjoy the freedom of bike riding. So we want to make it easier for women to get back on two wheels.  We've looked at the different ways of accessing a bike which include bike recycling schemes, bike hire and working with the bike retail industry.

Working with the bike retail industry

Since the launch of our 'Proud to support the Breeze Network' partnership with the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT), we've had a great response from 200 bike shops keen to be part of the scheme which aims to help women find their nearest female friendly bike shop.

We know that buying a bike or getting one repaired can be something of a daunting experience. 'What height... what type... what am I meant to be looking for...?' Together we've launched the scheme to recognise the work of independent traders in supporting women new to bike riding with straightforward advice, a range of women’s bikes and family kit, as well as information on local bike rides for beginners.

Breeze is the biggest ever programme focused on getting more women into riding bikes for fun, and we'll be promoting female friendly bike shops to all participants and volunteers. We're also encouraging women to nominate female friendly bike shops for inclusion in the scheme.

Working with bike hire and bike recycling schemes

We understand that not everyone might wish to buy a new bike. So we’ve looked at the different ways which include bike hire schemes and bike recycling schemes. There are lots of bike hire schemes popping up around the country including Boris’ Bikes in London and bike hire schemes in country parks. The price varies however some of our great Breeze champions have negotiated deals and discounts with some bike hire providers.

Bike recycling schemes are also on the rise as they are affordable ways of buying a bike. They are usually social or community enterprises and the bikes are donated by people or organisations and fixed and serviced by the bike recycling schemes. They are then sold and are a great way of getting a bike without spending too much money.

The Breeze network has developed a listing of the bike shops, hire and recycling schemes across England and your closest one can be found by clicking ‘Find a Bike’ on the Breeze homepage.

Please do let us know at breeze@britishcycling.org.uk if you would like to recommend a shop, bike hire or recycling scheme.
