Sky Ride Local in Stockton-on-Tees

If you’re fairly confident on your bike and ready to broaden your cycling horizons, our Steady rides are ideal. At a comfortable pace, and possibly with some modest hills along the way, rides take place on mainly quiet roads with plenty of sights along the way. Rides are between 6 and 20 miles long, at a moderate pace of between 7 and 10 miles an hour.

This ride takes you from the thrilling White Water Course of the Tees Barrage to the calm stillwaters of RSPB Saltholme. Heading away from the Barrage, via the north side of the river, we take the path toward Newport Bridge and through Port Clarence before arriving at the RSPB Saltholme Nature Reserve. Entry to Saltholme is free for cyclists to visit and whilst here you can explore the breathtaking, state-of-the-art building with panoramic views of this huge wetland. There is an excellent café which is stocked with all cyclists' favourites of freshly-brewed coffee, gooey cakes and more! There is also a great shop where you'll be able to spend a bit of pocket money, or splash the cash, before returning to The Barrage over Newport Bridge along the south side of the river.

Meet the Ride Leaders

  • Simon Groves Simon Groves Hi, I'm one of the newer Sky Ride Local, Assistant Ride Leaders.

I enjoy mountain biking and more recently road cycling. I commute by bike so I ride most days, it is a great way to improve fitness. I've just started to go cycle camping and touring. I like to build and maintain my own bikes and I quite enjoy wheel building as its quite relaxing.
  • Michael Phillips Michael Phillips Hi Sky Riders,
My name is Michael Phillips and have got back into cycling over the last 2 yrs. I enjoy getting out on my bike whenever home commitments allow. As I look after my disabled wife of 34 yrs. I just cycle for fun, health and fitness and enjoy meeting new people and encouraging them to get back on their bikes. It's great fun. You meet new people, make new friends, and get fit in the process. Come and join us and find out for yourself. Hoping to see you on a ride soon. Michael.
  • Chris Kirby Chris Kirby Hello All,
