Places to ride

There are a number of amazing routes and venues in the Blackpool area to help you make the most of your cycling experience – there really is something for everyone.

Summer 2011 sees the completion of two fantastic new cycling facilities in Blackpool:

• 1km closed circuit road race track at Palatine Sports Centre
• National standard BMX track in Stanley Park

The rest of the North West

There's some great on- and off-road riding in the North West from the Trough of Bowland in Lancashire to rugged off road trails in the Lake District. Add to this a well-developed network of leisure routes on the flatter coastal area and it's clear that the North West offers a great escape for everyone. Check out British Cycling's guide to where to ride in the North West. Sustrans has also got some great easy rides in Lancashire.

Report

7,500 people took to traffic-free streets on Sunday 14th August for Sky Ride Blackpool. The free cycling event, organised by British Cycling and Sky in partnership with Blackpool Council, allowed riders to take in an 8km traffic-free route at their own pace whilst enjoying some of the town's best-known landmarks.

The route took in Stanley Park and the famous Promenade. There was loads of entertainment on offer, and participants also had a chance to meet GB paralympic cyclist Tel Byrne. It was a great day for many families to see Blackpool on two wheels and ride around the town on traffic-free roads.

Paracycling World Champion and London 2012 hopeful Tel Byrne said: “Sky Ride was a fantastic day out for the whole family. It was a great opportunity for people to see Blackpool like they’ve never been able to before and ride around the town without having to worry about the traffic.”

Sky Ride Blackpool is just one part of the Sky Ride campaign, which aims to get a million more people cycling regularly by 2013. Sky Ride Local rides are running every Sunday through the summer in and around Blackpool, which take in everything from the countryside to local sights. There are also brilliant bike maintenance workshops on 30th September and 1st October, and Breeze women-only bike rides.

Sky Ride Local rides are fun, friendly and free community bike rides that help you get out and explore your local area. They’re led by a British Cycling trained ride leader who can provide support and give you a few tips, whatever your age or ability.
