Cycling in Knowsley

Knowsley is a great place to cycle, and now there are even more opportunities to get out and about on your bike in the area.

This year Knowsley is hosting a series of Sky Ride Locals – organised rides supported by British Cycling Ride Leaders. Keep an eye out for Social Cycling Groups, and Breeze bike rides for women too!

Knowsley Leisure & Culture Park

Knowsley’s new outdoor Velodrome and BMX track is open! There are lots of ways to get involved and have a go on the tracks, including the following sessions:

Stage 1 Taster / Accreditation session
An introductory session for beginners to the velodrome track. Professional coaching from a fully qualified British Cycling Track Coach.
Once you’ve successfully completed a taster session, you can then move onto Stage 2 Improver and Stage 3 Advanced accreditation.

Women & girls only sessions
Track sessions which cater for women of all ages and ability levels. Ride with friends and others of a similar ability to develop bike handling techniques and cycling fitness.

Senior sessions
More advanced sessions open to all club accredited riders over the age of 16. These sessions will further develop technique, skill and fitness and prepare you for various types of racing.

Coming soon: youth track sessions, over 60s sessions, and veterans SQT sessions.

All sessions are priced at: £2 for under 16s, £3 for over 16s. Bike & helmet hire: £3.

Pedal Away Knowsley

Pedal Away runs events and activities in Knowsley to improve mental wellbeing and increase the physical activity levels of people across the borough. It’s all about getting on your bike and feeling the benefits!

Operated by Cycling Projects, Pedal Away runs a number of community cycle rides every week, which everyone is welcome to attend regardless of ability. Bikes and helmets are available to hire for a small donation. Rides are at a leisurely pace and targeted at those who are just getting back on their bikes or enjoy the pleasures of cycling in a sociable group where everyone is made to feel welcome. All rides are predominantly traffic-free, making use of the wealth of established and new cycling infrastructure within the borough.

Mondays
Pedal Away Community Ride at Stadt Moers Park, Whiston
6pm-8pm: beginner / intermediate ride – usually between 6-8 miles (beginning May 2014, summer only).


Tuesdays
Health on Wheels at Court Hey Park, Huyton
10-11am: beginner / GP referral ride, ride stays within confines of the park
11am-1.30pm: intermediate ride – usually between 8-12 miles (with café stop).


Wednesdays
Health on Wheels at Stadt Moers Park, Whiston
10am-11am: beginner / GP referral ride – ride stays within confines of the park
11am-1.30pm: intermediate / progression / advanced ride – usually between 8-16 miles (with café stop).

Thursdays
Health on Wheels at Southdene Community Centre, Kirkby
11am-12noon: beginner / GP referral ride – ride stays within confines of the park
2pm-4pm: intermediate ride – usually between 4-8 miles
Pedal Away Community Ride at Court Hey Park, Huyton
6pm-8pm: beginner / intermediate ride – usually between 6-8 miles (beginning April 2014 – summer only).

Fridays
Wheels for All at Halewood Park
10am-3pm: Using adapted cycles to make cycling accessible to everyone. Sessions usually last between 30 minutes – 1 hour. No required distance. Also ideal for beginners and health referrals.


Sundays
Pedal Away Community Ride @ Southdene Community Centre, Kirkby
10am–12 noon: beginner / intermediate ride – usually between 6-8 miles.
